KWETU started with the engagement of professionals who volunteered their knowledge and skills for the initial group of 10 students and a lot of in-kind support from the public and friends. Today KWETU employs 34 Staff and operates not only from the original site in Mtwapa but also has 3 outreach offices in Ganze, Gongoni, and Sokoke.

Kwetu Training Center for sustainable development (KWETU) was founded in 1996 as a vocational training center and was registered as a non-governmental organization (NGO) in 1997. Kwetu The aim of establishing the center was to equip the unemployed youth, women, and fisher folk with knowledge and skills for setting up and managing natural resources-based businesses aiming at self-employment creation and poverty alleviation.

Kwetu was founded on the premise that nature provides enough for everyone’s needs as long as we know how to use its resources sustainably. The basis for sustainability is not only knowledge but also a value system that promotes (self)responsibility towards one’s natural environment.
